Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend 18-Saturday

Read about: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday

Saturday….CAR SHOW DAY! Love Saturday because a big part of Viva for me, is the cars. I love classic cars and I love dreaming about owning my 56 Bel Air one day but until then I will take just drooling over the cars instead.

It was a really great day, weather wise so my hubby and I ate and then hit up the shopping at the car show first. This was a good call going a bit early because it was not busy yet and we could do our shopping with ease without having to fight the crowds.

I was like a kid in a candy store as I have not done any shopping up to this point yet and was really itching to spend money. One of my favorite pieces that I found but did not buy due to being way to expensive, was an “Ethel of Beverly Hills” Cardigan. I own one already and have a serious love and need to own more (see blog post). This one was beautiful.

I did buy the following: 2 brooches. The poodle was vintage and the seahorse was new. I also added to my hair flowers collection with a cool fruit clip (from Viva Dulce Marina). Lastly my husband found the sweetest shirt with flamingos on it. We can now be that couple that matches when I wear my tiki flamingo dress to the next Toronto Vintage Society Tiki party.

Shopping done, now it’s time for a wedding..from Elvis.

Now for the cars, all the glorious vintage cars. Here is a collection of some of the cars we saw.

While we were wandering around the car show I saw the coolest outfit of all time. This wonderful woman was dressed as Rockford Peach from the movie “A League of their Own“. I had to get a picture as this is one of my all-time favorite movies.

After the car show we checked out one of the headliner bands, 50s and 60s teen idol DION.

He was really good and sounded just amazing. Here is a video I took from his show. See for yourself.

Saturday Night-The Night when everyone breaks out their best outfits for the evening. I’m wearing my vintage Lurex dress that I got from a friend and I have to say that I felt just amazing in it! It was my fav dress of the whole entire weekend.

I also finally ran into an Instagram follower as well, Wendi the Bakelite Bloodhound thanks to her eagle eyes. She was really nice and it was cool to finally chat in person. We also got a picture taken which my friend Bill the Photo bomber ruined or made better depending on how you look at it. lol!

Saturday Nights bands were big ones..once again. First Up “The Stars Rockabilly Show” featuring: Joe Clay, Huelyn Duvall, Ray Campi and Big Sandy. Great show.

Marti Brom was up next and ever since I saw her a couple of years ago doing a Janis Martin Tribute I have been a big fan. Marti channels the sound of Patsy Cline and was really really good and I danced so much during her set and was pretty bummed when it was done.

And last but not least the final band of the night at 2am was Levi Dexter & the Rockats. I had been eagerly awaiting Levi all weekend and was thrilled that I was still awake to catch their act.

It’s 2am and we are still awake!

Levi & the Rockats are considered early groundbreaking pioneers of neo-rockabilly originally formed in the UK in the 70s, banging back to USA, National TV appearances, and paving the way for all the other ‘Kat’ Bands (source). I have been a fan for a very long time and was just enthralled by the showmanship and music radiating off the stage. It was a great way to end the evening, even the dance floor was still packed.

And that was Saturday Night. How was your Saturday night at Viva?

My Early 1900s Vintage Car Show Adventure

This past weekend I was very lucky to be able to attend an amazing event called “The Old Car Festival” at the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Detroit Michigan area. I attended this event with my family and met up with some vintage friends from the Toronto area as well, so it was a great little group that went.

All I can say about this event is this…YOU MUST GO NEXT YEAR! No seriously if you live in Michigan, Ontario, or can drive or fly then you must go! I had so much fun and I did not even do half of what my friends did who attended the whole weekend.

First up there were early 1900 vintage cars..everywhere like as far as the eye could see and ranged in age from the early 1900’s right up to the early 1930’s.

My FAVORITE CAR of all time from the show! Pierce Arrow!

A Pierce-Arrow was a status symbol, owned by many Hollywood stars and tycoons. Most of the royalty of the world had at least one Pierce-Arrow in its collection. So dreamy…..

There were so many cars there, that there was major street congestion as well! Traffic jam 1910 style!

If driving a car was not your style, you could have also rode a vintage bike. I love these ladies such style.

It’s a Bike Gang! How does one ride a bike like that??

There was also a couple of vintage trains that you could have taken a trip around the park on. Next year I’m doing this!

Vintage Train-Greenfield Village

After all that car, bike and train viewing one is bound to get hungry and the village had lots of options but the best one by far was the Eagle Tavern. A real tavern from the 1800’s that was moved to the village many years ago.

The family waiting to be called in for lunch-Eclectic bunch they are 🙂

You ate by candle light, sat in old wood chairs (ohhh my bum), were served by waiters and waitress in period dress and even had your name called to your table by the town crier.

The coolest part of my lunch experience (beyond the delish food) was the Greenfield village beer with my name on it!

Hey that’s me! Who are you calling old?

After we ate, we went and saw some lovely singers, sing songs from the 1920s. My favorite was the “Irving Berlin” melody.

Then we wandered around some more and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the festival.

We also admired the fashions that were in attendance. There was some dapper men (aka my friend Dean).

A favorite of mine…the cutest vintage sailor boys….ever!

There were also gorgeous ladies as well like my beautiful friend Amanda.

Her dress was made by her mother (I believe) and is just wonderful and I adore it on her.

Then we all managed to find each other for a lovely vintage group photo (excuse my 40s wear, I really have nothing 1920s).

After all the picture-taking it was time to find a spot for the Big Band dance and the parade of vintage cars with their gas lights on.

It was truly magical and then we got to dance to this amazing band! The beautiful woman in the pink had the most gorgeous voice.

Then we danced as the cars drove by.

A great shot of Dean and I making magic on the dance floor..aka the road.

Liz Clothing Note: I’m wearing a vintage 1940s day dress that I recently purchased from “The Best Vintage Clothing” online store. I adore this dress so much. It also has buttons down the back.

I got to dance with all the men! Lucky me 🙂 Geoff and I cutting a rug as they used to say back in the day.

Lastly all good things must come to an end with fireworks.

And then we went home tired but happy 🙂

I hope you enjoyed my little post on my fantastic adventure this weekend and hopefully if you live near by, you can join us next year!

I will now leave you with a great video that Geoff created of the weekend (near the end you can catch me swing dancing).

Liz 🙂
